I was on patrol with a fellow officer in a busy town in the north of the UK when we were called to the scene of a major fight. When we got there - we were first on the scene - we found a mini riot going on and all hell was breaking loose...

I'm not going to go in to details - they're really too upsetting to recount, even now - but our radios were taken from us and we were set upon by the mob. Before help arrived, we were totally outnumbered and assaulted, and that's how I ended up wondering where I was going to go from here.

You see, my physical injuries were bad enough and the psychological damage was pretty awful too. In fact I was eventually diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, the sort of thing you normally hear about in wars..

It became clear that I was probably never
going to be fit to resume my duties and function
as I had, andI was pensioned off on
medical grounds.

Can you imagine what a low point that was for me? Not only had I got to cope with my physical and mental scars, but fast approaching 40, I'd also lost the only career I'd ever had - the only thing I knew how to do. The thing I loved doing.

I've got to admit that when I thought
about the future, it scared me witless.

No disrespect to security guards, but I couldn't see myself sitting in a freezing cold hut on a building site for the next 25 years...the well-trodden route for many an ex-copper...and I just couldn't think of any job that I really wanted to do.

I spent a longtime recuperating at home - and that gave
me a lot of time to think...

And a lot of time to just lay there - watching television.

Now I didn't have access to satellite TV at the time, and so I'd just flick between the terrestrial channels looking for something interesting to watch. And a pretty fruitless search it proved to be most days. Which is why I found myself spending a great deal of time (more time than is probably healthy for a grown man!) watching children’s TV programmes.

Well it may not be healthy, but
it certainly proved to be lucrative...

The more I watched, and the more an idea started to form in my mind. And that idea can be summarised in four words...

"I could do that!"

I'd always enjoyed English at school, but the only thing I'd written professionally since then was a witness statement! When my kids were young, I'd dreamed up some characters and made up stories for them, but it was never anything more than that. It never crossed my mind that I might be able to make money out of them...

Not until I had all the time in the
world to just lay there and think.

In the back of my mind, the rational part of my brain was screaming out that this was a crazy idea...a pipe dream. Looking back, I reckon there must have been people thinking that I'd taken one too many blows to the head, when I told them what I had in mind.

But I had to try. What did I have to lose?

I dug out some of the stories I'd written for the kids, and one which I'd called 'The Lampies' seemed quite good. In fact the more I looked at it, the more I came to think that it was as good - if not better - than the stuff I was watching on TV.

But what would I do with the idea? How would I develop it? Who would I need to approach with it? What would I say to them? What would they expect to see from me? How would I get paid? How would I make sure I wasn't ripped off?

Fast-forward a few years...

Within 5 years of being 'pensioned-off' from the police force I had three shows on the BBC. That first idea, 'The Lampies', became a 52 episode series which sold in dozens of countries worldwide. And can you believe I had major animators work on the show for me...
