"From Beaten-Up Police Officer To Massive TV Success... "
“How I Went From A Retired Inspector To Becoming one of the Most Succesful Children's TV Programme Creators...”
Date: Dear Customer,
But that July night back in
I was on patrol with a fellow officer in a busy town in the north of the UK when we were called to the scene of a major fight. When we got there - we were first on the scene - we found a mini riot going on and all hell was breaking loose...
I'm not going to go in to details - they're really too upsetting to recount, even now - but our radios were taken from us and we were set upon by the mob. Before help arrived, we were totally outnumbered and assaulted, and that's how I ended up wondering where I was going to go from here.
You see, my physical injuries were bad enough and the psychological damage was pretty awful too. In fact I was eventually diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, the sort of thing you normally hear about in wars..
It became clear that I was probably never
Can you imagine what a low point that was for me? Not only had I got to cope with my physical and mental scars, but fast approaching 40, I'd also lost the only career I'd ever had - the only thing I knew how to do. The thing I loved doing.
I've got to admit that when I thought
No disrespect to security guards, but I couldn't see myself sitting in a freezing cold hut on a building site for the next 25 years...the well-trodden route for many an ex-copper...and I just couldn't think of any job that I really wanted to do.
I spent a longtime recuperating at home - and that gave
And a lot of time to just lay there - watching television. Now I didn't have access to satellite TV at the time, and so I'd just flick between the terrestrial channels looking for something interesting to watch. And a pretty fruitless search it proved to be most days. Which is why I found myself spending a great deal of time (more time than is probably healthy for a grown man!) watching children’s TV programmes. Well it may not be healthy, but The more I watched, and the more an idea started to form in my mind. And that idea can be summarised in four words... "I could do that!" I'd always enjoyed English at school, but the only thing I'd written professionally since then was a witness statement! When my kids were young, I'd dreamed up some characters and made up stories for them, but it was never anything more than that. It never crossed my mind that I might be able to make money out of them... Not until I had all the time in the In the back of my mind, the rational part of my brain was screaming out that this was a crazy idea...a pipe dream. Looking back, I reckon there must have been people thinking that I'd taken one too many blows to the head, when I told them what I had in mind. But I had to try. What did I have to lose? I dug out some of the stories I'd written for the kids, and one which I'd called 'The Lampies' seemed quite good. In fact the more I looked at it, the more I came to think that it was as good - if not better - than the stuff I was watching on TV. (**Instert Lampies Graphic Here**) But what would I do with the idea? How would I develop it? Who would I need to approach with it? What would I say to them? What would they expect to see from me? How would I get paid? How would I make sure I wasn't ripped off? It's the answers to questions like these that I'm writing to you about today - but first let me finish the story... Fast-forward a few years... Within 5 years of being 'pensioned-off' from the police force I had three shows on the BBC. That first idea, 'The Lampies', became a 52 episode series which sold in dozens of countries worldwide. And can you believe I had major animators work on the show for me... Me, a Police Officer (retired)! Hot on the heels of 'The Lampies' came 'Doctor Otter', which the BBC made 26 episodes of and sold internationally. And I followed that up with 'Sergeant Stripes'. There's been one 26 episode series so far and the number of countries buying into the series was over 10 at the last count. Well, if you'd like to know, I think you'll be interested in my manual... “David Bonner - So many people dream of doing this, but so few ever do anything about it. Well here's your chance to be the exception, by learning from someone who has actually done it. I'd never written a thing professionally before I got involved in this, and it could be the same for you. I'd never even submitted a letter for publication in a newspaper - let alone prepared a programme idea to offer to the most respected broadcasting organisation in the world. So you need absolutely no prior experience... It really doesn't matter that you've never written anything professionally or had dealings with publishers and broadcasting organisations. This is the sort of know-how I'm going to be sharing with you in the manual. Why am I doing this book? Well I do have an ulterior motive which I’ll tell you about later. But for now (and by way of a clue) I want to reveal the real secret of this business - the one thing that is absolutely central and critical to your success... Ideas! That's it...that's what it's all about. The idea is the thing. When it comes right down to it, if your idea or concept is spot on, everything else can be learned or hired in for peanuts. I can show you how to do it all. And yes, I can even show you how to unlock the ideas which I know you have hidden away undiscovered in the recesses of your brain. Buried away in your experience, knowledge, personality and skills is the germ of one or more red-hot saleable TV ideas. Through the course, I'll help you bring those ideas out, and turn them in to life-changing amounts of money. Here are just a few of the things you'll learn through this programme…
And much, much more... So how much is all this going to cost?
